Organic Sulfur is a non-poisonous and non-odorous sulfur extracted from plants. In the human body, organic sulfur is mostly found in the bones, sinew, nails, hair and connective tissue. Skin wrinkles, discoloration and cornification of finger/toe nails are the results of sulfur deficiency. MSM is a natural substance found in food and in the human body. It is also a metabolite of DMSO and is believed thereby to be one of the reasons DMSO is an effective pain remedy. MSM is a source of sulfur, a mineral element critical to the normal function and structure of the human body. Sulfur is a raw material for the protein and connective tissue (especially proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans such as hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate) that make up our body mass, for enzymes that conduct countless chemical reactions, and for powerful natural compounds (such as glutathione) that protect against toxicity and harmful free radicals. MSM consists chemically of 2 hydrocarbon units attached to a unit with one sulfur and two oxygen atoms. Dr. Jacob lists as the most frequent applications of MSM: 1) Degenerative wear-and-tear arthritis, 2) Rheumatoid arthritis, 3) Chronic back pain, 4) Chronic headaches, 5) Muscle pain, 6) Fibromyalgia, 7) Tendinitis and bursitis, 8) Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, 9) TMJ problems, 10) Post-traumatic pain and inflammation, and 11) Heartburn. Normal dosages for MSM range from 2 to 8 grams daily, but larger amounts may be needed in some situations. In some cases loosening of the stools may occur, which may be remedied by taking smaller amounts spread out over the course of the day or by reducing the dosage.

Lipids
Cell walls are made of lecithin and essential fatty acids. As explained in the section on anti-aging, free radicals attack the walls of cells, creating holes, and other free radicals begin to damage cellular DNA. This leads to the progression of dysfunctional cells and skin damage. When lecithin and essential fatty acids are added to the skin, cell repair begins immediately. Subsequently cells retain water and begin to function in a more productive and protective manner. Essential fatty acids further assist in re-establishing the skin’s lipid barrier function. Nutritionists and physicians have advised of the beneficial effects fish (especially salmon), soy bean extracts and nuts have upon the skin. These foods are rich in lecithin and essential fatty acids. Anna Bellina uses high concentrations of lecithin and essential fatty acids (safflower oil, avocado oil, evening primrose oil, etc.) in its anti-aging and skin rejuvenation products.

Zinc
Zinc is critical to the entire body’s immune and repair processes. The study of skin injuries has shown a skin injury site becomes saturated with zinc within 90 minutes of the injury. Zinc levels increase to a peak on approximately the 7th day following the injury and return to normal at about the 14th day. Other studies show that as we age, zinc saturation of an injury does not achieve the same levels as younger skin and overall systemic (bodily) zinc levels decline. The inability of elderly people to heal quickly or heal completely is most frequently related to inadequate zinc-injury response and low systemic zinc levels.

Zinc is required for collagen production and elastin synthesis. It is required for DNA repair. Zinc is required for DNA duplication, which is required for cell division. It is required for the production of superoxide dismutase, a powerful skin antioxidant. Zinc is a co-factor in the skin’s production of certain metalloproteinases that remove damaged or mutated tissue. It is a co-factor in the production of adenosine deaminase, which signals T-cells as one of our body's immune processes. Zinc is critically important to the skin and body.

Each of these processes is involved in healing and repair and without adequate zinc levels, the process of skin rejuvenation is slow or simply does not happen. When rejuvenating the skin with vitamin A, betaglucan, or centella asiatica there is no physical injury and the zinc-injury response does not automatically increase zinc levels to facilitate repair. Additionally, mature patients may not have adequate zinc levels in the skin. Therefore zinc levels may need to be increased by topical application.

Scientists have identified sirtuins as proteins that control the death process at the cellular level. Sirtuins influence the metabolism of the cells and the rate at which cells produce energy. I'm also using the O Serum, which I love. My rosacea is improving, the acne is clearing up (I never thought I'd see the day that that would happen!). I do mist the toner as often as I can and I love it also. My skin has the bumpy look on my chin and the skin has an uneven complexion. I've been using the O Serum for awhile now and I have to say that I have noticed that any blemishes I get come in smaller and plain pink. They used to be the cystic 'itch like crazy, hurt like heck' kind that never went away no matter what you used. Now if I notice I get one, I think "no biggie, it'll be gone soon" whereas before it was like "oh come on, this is getting ridiculous". They clear up quicker and even the marks go away faster then before, which I'm sure works in conjunction with all the products. So, the thing I'd like to say about this serum is...It Totally ROCKS!!!!!!!!

Good Morning, Patricia! You asked me to let you know how the N Serum worked for me...and I want to let you know that I really like it! Since I have been taking good care of my skin for years now, my skin was already in good condition. Yet I could still see the effects of the N Serum.
