Like glycolic acid, it dissolves the cellular cement responsible for holding the excess dead skin cells on the surface of the skin thereby facilitating their sloughing off. Excess dead skin cells can be associated with many common skin problems including dehydration, rough skin, pigmentation spotting, lines, wrinkles, acne, etc. Unlike glycolic, lactic acid is also found in the blood and muscle tissues and the skin's natural moisturizing factor so it is less irritating than glycolic and more appropriate for aging, dry and sensitive skin.

1% Salicylic Acid, the most popular beta hydroxy acid (BHA), is derived from acetylsalicylic acid, or aspirin. Aspirin has anti-inflammatory properties, and salicylic acid retains many of these anti-inflammatory properties so it does not leave the skin as irritated AHAs. Being oil soluble allows beta hydroxy acid to penetrate into the pore which contains sebum and exfoliate the dead skin cells that are built up inside the pore. Therefore, BHAs work better on oily and acne skin and milia.
